I originally set up a trade account with Howdens in Sherburn in Elmet, although I never actually got around to using it. About two weeks ago I received a call from them saying that, due to inactivity, my account would be closed unless I made a purchase soon. Conveniently, I needed a new door and frame for my warehouse office build, so I went in last Friday (28/11) to place an order.
I ordered one door, one door frame, a hinge set and a handle set. I was told the items weren’t in stock and would need to be ordered from the main depot, arriving Tuesday (2/12). I explained clearly that I was flying out to Ireland on Monday and wouldn’t be back until the earliest Friday (5/12). I asked if I could collect on Saturday (6/12) instead. They confirmed this was absolutely fine and even stated my account would remain open.
Fast-forward to today (Friday 5/12). I returned *a day early* to collect the order, only to be told my trade account had been closed anyway. The only way to purchase my own order was to put it through on a cash account and then reopen a new trade account from scratch.
So not only was their promise meaningless, but the whole experience has been disorganised, frustrating, and ultimately a waste of my time. If this is how they treat a customer trying to actually spend money with them, I dread to think what their idea of good service looks like.
Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise—at least now I won’t be bombarded with sales calls anymore. I’ll just buy the door from B&Q instead.
**Side note:** When I originally set up the account, I asked for login details to be emailed to me (as Trade UK, CEF and many others do without issue). These emails never arrived. I’ve since discovered they can’t even spell “enquiries” correctly in the email address the were trying to contact. Says a lot, really.

We got a kitchen from Howdens earlier this year, great price and service. Amy came out and measured for us, the kitchen came very quickly and is exactly what we wanted.
